Filmmaker FAQ

Here are some answers to common questions we receive.

DO I HAVE TO STILL BE A STUDENT TO ENTER?

Current students, staff, faculty, and alumni alike are welcome to enter! We also allow local high school students to participate as well!

DO I HAVE TO HAVE A TEAM READY BEFORE I REGISTER?

Not at all! You can sign your name and register a spot and gather a team together until the Friday at 4:30pm. You can even work solo. Even if you don't have a "full" team, there are always individuals at the kick-off looking to join one.

HOW BIG CAN TEAMS BE?

Teams can be as big as you want them to be! Just keep in mind that the films are only 5 minutes long. Having a large team of people will be more difficult to manage than a smaller one.

I DON'T HAVE AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA, WHAT DO I DO?

You don't need a $5000 dollar camera to make a great film! We understand that you are students and do not have "Hollywood" equipment or budgets. You can even film on your cellphone. We're looking for great story telling and creativity when incorporating the 3 elements that we provide at the kick off (prop, location, line of dialogue).

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO EDIT FILMS... HELP?

We are here to help! We will be sending out video tutorials of the basics of editing footage on Premiere Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro is installed on ALL desktop computers at the Lyons New Media Centre. Lyons will be open on the second day so you and your team can come edit from 10am - 5:30pm. There will be media specialists in house who will help you if you have any difficulties.

HOW LONG ARE THE FILMS SUPPOSED BE?

Each team's film MUST be no longer than 5 minutes.
